PPP Framework

The PPP framework (Presentation, Practice, and Production) is a widely used method for teaching English as a foreign or second language. Students are presented the target language, then are provided with opportunities to practice it in controlled and guided activities, and finally let them produce it in more free and creative tasks.

Presentation

The Presentation section introduces learners to the new language through a meaningful and engaging way such as using pictures, videos, stories, dialogues, realia, or examples to elicit or explain the language. The instructor then checks understanding through concept questions, drills, and feedback.

Practice

The Practice section has learners completed exercises or activities using the target language in a controlled or semi-controlled way. The hope is that learners consolidate and internalize the language through repetition and feedback. This can be done using practice activities such as gap-fills, matching, ordering, multiple choice, sentence transformation or role-plays with the teacher monitoring the learners’ work and providing correction and feedback.

Production

In the Production section, learners are given tasks or activities to use the target language in a less restrictive way. In this way, learners develop their fluency and confidence and demonstrate the language in real-life situations. These can be done through things such as games, simulations, debates, discussions, projects, or presentations. The teacher facilitates the learners’ communication and provides feedback and encouragement.
